It’s really quite simple. A ghost producer writes music with a view to sell it onto a third party. The music produced is the ghost production. And you are the third party. You can buy the rights to the music, along with all of the files, and release it as your own. It’s like having a book ghost-written, but with music.
Many people. DJs, producers, TV/video production companies, ad companies… the list goes on.

Unfortunately not. You’d be surprised at how many songs you hear are not written by the named artist. Even remixers have been know to get them produced externally. It’s been happening for a long time within the music industry, but now it’s much more accessible to anyone, even on a low budget. It is well-known that many of the artists you find in the Beatport top 100 (even the official charts, too) either started out as ghost producers or have used ghost producers. Including some very big names!
Many reasons. With ghost produced music the rights are passed to the buyer, so they can do whatever they want with it. Almost anything. That’s a big reason. Some people buy ghost productions because need help finding a new sound - something that stands out, sets them apart or gives them inspiration to try something new. Some want to get some attention, become famous, or make some extra money releasing music that they don’t have the facility or ability to do themselves.Others don’t have enough time to write their own music, or you want to accelerate their song output. Some might need something of a particularly nature for their project. Or maybe they want a standout track for their commercial, TV show or YouTube video. There are many applications for unique music, and many more reasons why people want to own it.
Many producers do release music themselves. For the others, some just love producing music or don’t want the publicity that can come with a successful release. Others find that they can be more successful through writing for other people. Not everyone aspires to the same goals, and we fully support either road.
